{"id":2892,"date":"2020-08-20T16:46:32","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T15:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/comunicarestiintifica.ro\/?p=2892"},"modified":"2020-08-21T07:54:28","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T06:54:28","slug":"cum-se-stabileste-daca-este-interesant-in-cazul-unui-subiect-stiintific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comunicarestiintifica.ro\/en\/cum-se-stabileste-daca-este-interesant-in-cazul-unui-subiect-stiintific\/","title":{"rendered":"How to determine whether a new science finding is \"interesting\""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why is it that we hear everywhere about some research results, while others, perhaps published in a journal with a higher impact factor, obtained with more effort, do not seem to interest the public or the press?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The potential interest that a scientific article or research result can arouse can be defined by its so-called \"newsworthiness\" - that is, whether or not that information is interesting enough to be brought to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journalistic criteria for measuring newsworthiness guide newsrooms in choosing\nand communication specialists in filtering all the information they receive and suggest only a few to be covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criteria from below are adapted after Lars Lindberg Christensen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0387263241\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hands-On Guide for\nScience Communicators: A Step-by-Step Approach to Public Outreach<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Temporal and spatial proximity: it has happened close and it has happened recently<\/li><li>Relevance: the subject matter has a direct or almost direct influence on readers' lives<\/li><li>Impact: The more profound the consequences of a research result, the more likely it is to be picked up by the media<\/li><li>Conflict: a topic that traditionally drives opposing reactions (global warming, cloning, etc.) will get more attention than the rest<\/li><li>Human interest: life stories that audiences can empathise with<\/li><li>Mystery: Mysterious phenomena, strange details, unexpected results are taken up without much insistence by the press<\/li><li>Important discovery<\/li><li>Records (topics about oldest, biggest, fastest, etc.)<\/li><li>Topics unconditionally loved by the press: solar system, black holes, planets that can host life, aliens, etc.<\/li><li>Beautiful images: especially in astronomy<\/li><li>Publishing in a truly prestigious journal: topics published in Science and Nature are viewed with more interest by journalists<\/li><li>Relatedness to a \"hot\" topic, possibly in a parallel or related field<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-normal-font-size\">Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@isaacquesada?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaac Quesada<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/s\/photos\/news?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sm-light-secondary-background-color has-background has-normal-font-size\">Every month, I send <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comunicarestiintifica.ro\/en\/newsletter\/\">a newsletter about Science &amp; Communication<\/a>with articles on how research can be better promoted in Romania.
